Vergil is a book written by Henry Nettleship and first published in 1880. It is a comprehensive study of the life and works of the ancient Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro, commonly known as Virgil. The book is divided into two parts: the first part focuses on Virgil's life, while the second part analyzes his literary works, particularly the Aeneid.Nettleship provides a detailed account of Virgil's life, from his birth in 70 BC to his death in 19 BC. He discusses Virgil's education, his relationship with Augustus, and his literary influences. Nettleship also examines the historical context in which Virgil lived, including the political and social climate of ancient Rome.In the second part of the book, Nettleship delves into Virgil's literary works, particularly the Aeneid. He analyzes the themes, characters, and style of the epic poem, and provides an in-depth examination of its structure and narrative. Nettleship also discusses Virgil's other works, including his Eclogues and Georgics.Overall, Vergil is a comprehensive and detailed study of the life and works of one of the most important poets in ancient Roman literature. It is a valuable resource for scholars and students of classical literature and history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
