Ein "Familienroman" über die Schicksale einer wohlhabenden jüdischen Familie vom England der (vermutlich) 30er Jahre bis in die Nachkriegszeit. Auf 200 Seiten gelingt Anita Brookner wofür manch anderer auf 800 keinen Raum findet: Ein Abbild zu zeichnen einer gezeichneten Familie, zwischen generationsübergreifendem Trauma und historischen Umwälzungen. Nie gehetzt, nie klischeeüberladen und vor allem nie zynisch im Angesicht tragischer Schicksale. Für mich Weltliteratur!
