The Last Judgment does not mean the destruction of the physical world, but a profound transformation within the spiritual world. Emanuel Swedenborg rejected the traditional belief that the Last Judgment would bring about the literal destruction of heaven and Earth. He taught instead that judgment occurs in the spiritual realm, where human beings continue to live after death and where the true nature of every soul is ultimately revealed. This volume brings together Swedenborg's three principal writings on the subject: Last Judgment, Last Judgment Continued, and Last Judgment Posthumous. In these works, he describes what he claimed to have witnessed during a great spiritual judgment in 1757 and explains its meaning for Christianity, the afterlife, and humanity's relationship with God. According to Swedenborg, biblical prophecies concerning a new heaven and a new Earth refer not to the annihilation of creation but to the end of a corrupted spiritual age and the beginning of a renewed religious order. Judgment takes place among spirits gathered between heaven and hell, restoring spiritual freedom and balance rather than destroying the material universe. Drawing upon his distinctive interpretations of Scripture and his reported experiences in the spiritual world, Swedenborg offers a radically different vision of judgment, resurrection, heaven, and hell. Presented here in John Whitehead's translation, The Teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, Vol. III provides a concentrated introduction to one of the most unusual and influential systems of Christian mystical theology.
