But after witnessing a lynching, he chooses to pass as white, exchanging cultural identity and creative purpose for security and material comfort. First published anonymously in 1912, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is a novel rather than a literal autobiography. Its exploration of racial passing, identity, artistic responsibility, violence, and divided consciousness made it a landmark of African American literature and an important precursor to the Harlem Renaissance.
