Presented as the confession of an unnamed narrator, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man follows a gifted young man who can move between Black and white society in post-Reconstruction America. Raised by his mother and initially unaware of the racial divisions surrounding him, he gradually confronts the realities of prejudice, segregation, and the dangerous uncertainty of belonging to two worlds. Drawn to music, the narrator dreams of transforming African American spirituals and ragtime into a distinctly American art form. His travels carry him from the rural South and New York nightlife to Europe, where his talent offers the possibility of artistic success. But after witnessing a lynching, he chooses to pass as white, exchanging cultural identity and creative purpose for security and material comfort. First published anonymously in 1912, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is a novel rather than a literal autobiography. Its exploration of racial passing, identity, artistic responsibility, violence, and divided consciousness made it a landmark of African American literature and an important precursor to the Harlem Renaissance.
