Es ist bemerkenswert, wie gelungen der Autor die Geschichte Londons so aufgearbeitet hat, dass sie sich wunderbar in einen Roman fügt. Es führt - schon naturgemäß - kein Einzelcharakter durch über 2000 Jahre Stadtgeschichte, wohl aber ein gut durchdachter Stammbaum, den der Leser dankenswerterweise hinten im Buch als Schaubild findet. Es ist äußerst interessant mitzuerleben, wie sich ein keltischer, ein sächsischer, ein normannischer und ein Wikinger-Familienstamm über die Jahrhunderte ineinander verzweigen. Die meisten Charaktere sind, wie ich finde, doch so weit ausgearbeitet, dass man ein ziemlich genaues Bild von ihnen hat. Die historischen Fakten sind lebendig erzählt und tun dem Lesefluss keinen Abbruch. Man kann sich gut in die jeweiligen Epochen hineinversetzen.
Ich liebte die Stadt London schon vorher, dieser Roman hat mir diese Stadt noch nähergebracht. Eine absolute Leseempfehlung!
