Haben Sie sich je gefragt warum Öl in de 70er Jahren teuer und in den 80ern billig war, warum die OPEC selten funktioniert und was der Ursprung der Golfkriege und des Niedergangs des britischen Imperiums war? Dann ist dieses äusserst lesbare Buch für Sie.
Yergins "Biographie des Erdöls" beginnt 100 Jahre früher, in Pennsilvanien, wo die ersten Bohrtürme erstellt wurden. Seit dann ist das Erdöl so eng verknüpft mit der allgemeinen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Geschichte, dass sich das Werk fast als Einführung in diese eignen könnte. Yergin seziert die letzten 150 Jahre (ohne die letzten zwei Jahrzehnte) entlang der Ader des Öls und passiert damit Revue der wichtigsten Entwicklungen und Wendungen. Daneben stellt er uns schillernde Figuren vor, wie zum Beispiel Calouste Gulbenkian, den zu googlen allein sich schon lohnt.
