Spannend, fesselnd, aufregend!

Bewertung am 26.02.2012

Bewertungsnummer: 768850

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Zoey Redbird, up till then an ordinary American schoolgirl, is marked by a vampire tracker to become a vampire. This means she has to immediately enter the nearest "House of Night" in order to survive the physiological changes that will turn her into a vampire during the next four years. In a vision of Nyx, Goddess of Night and vampires Zoey is given special gifts, which she discovers and explores in the course of the book. Upon entering the House of Night Zoey witnesses a sinister scene. I thought at first from the description some poor boy was being raped by an evil vampyress, but no, it actually turns out that the boy merely does not know how to turn down his ex girl-friend. The book is filled with the typical problems of American high-school life: finding friends and rivals, being a new kid and and avoiding being an outsider in your new school, boyfriend troubles, cliques and clothes, nerds, dorks and geeks, problems with parents. Added to that is the supernatural element, finding out what being a vampire entails, the Goddess Nyx and her worship which also encompasses Native American Elements. There are also interesting aspects of clashes of this goddess worship with American Christian fundamentalists. Some parts of "Marked" especially the sex (thinking about, but not doing) made me feel way too old for the story. As the other reviewers wrote the sex is strongly juvenile American and very much about protecting innocent young readers from practices that might be inappropriate or perceived to be indecent. Girls are advised to not allow themselves to be degraded and exploited. I would find it more constructive to advise girls only to do what they find enjoyable and to insist on equal rights and having the favour returned. But OK, you must of course take into consideration, that the author is an ex high school teacher and can't very well encourage behaviour that is illegal in some parts of the USA. I did not have that problem (making me feel much too old for the story) with other children's books , e. g. Harry Potter, Mercedes Lackey or Eoin Colfer. I prefer books that either completely leave out sex, which most children's books and classics authors such as Enid Blyton or Jean Webster manage beautifully, or embrace a more mature view of sex. Still I found the story sufficiently enthralling to immediately grab the next four books in the Series. Each book concludes with a cliffhanger ending. Plan to either read the whole series or live with the frustration of not knowing how the story ends.
