Dieses Buch ist sehr umfangreich; es bietet viele interessante Artikel, die als Einführung in ein mathematisches Themengebiet dienen können (häufig mit einer Auflistung von weiterführender Literatur). Obwohl viele Beiträge zu diesem Buch von führenden Mathematikern geschrieben wurden, ist es vermutlich auch teilweise für Laien verständlich (da viele Artikel sehr 'pädagogisch' geschrieben wurden); insbesondere Teile I (Introduction), II (The Origin of Modern Mathematics), VI (Mathematicians). Die anderen Teile sind z.T. sehr fortgeschritten, erfordern beträchtliche Vorkenntnisse; auf jeden Fall wird kaum ein Leser in der Lage sein, das ganze Buch zu verstehen: im Vorwort bemerken die Herausgeber, dass es selbst ihnen (T. Gowers ist Fieldsmedaillenträger) nicht gelungen ist, es vollständig zu verstehen.
