Counterfeit Miracles is a book written by Benjamin B. Warfield, a theologian and professor at Princeton Theological Seminary, first published in 1918. The book is a critical examination of the claims of miraculous gifts and phenomena within the Christian church, particularly in the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements.Warfield argues that many of the supposed miracles and gifts, such as speaking in tongues, healing, and prophecy, are not genuine supernatural occurrences but rather are either deliberate frauds or natural phenomena misinterpreted as miracles. He also critiques the theology behind the belief in ongoing miraculous gifts, arguing that they are unnecessary and unsupported by Scripture. The book is divided into three parts: the first examines the history of miraculous gifts in the church, the second analyzes the nature of miracles and the criteria for determining their authenticity, and the third applies these principles to specific examples of supposed miracles.Counterfeit Miracles has been influential in shaping the views of many conservative Christians on the subject of miraculous gifts and has been praised for its rigorous scholarship and logical argumentation. However, it has also been criticized for its dismissive attitude towards the experiences of those who claim to have experienced miraculous gifts and for its failure to engage with the theological arguments of those who support ongoing miraculous gifts. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
