""Caraboo"" is a non-fiction book written by John Mathew Gutch, originally published in 1817. The book tells the story of a young woman named Mary Willcocks, who posed as a foreign princess named Caraboo in order to gain the sympathy and support of a wealthy lady living near Bristol. Mary Willcocks was able to convince the lady and her family that she was a member of a far-off exotic tribe and had been kidnapped by pirates before escaping to England. She went on to live with the family for several weeks, during which time she captivated them with her exotic stories and behavior. However, Mary's deception was eventually uncovered by a local doctor who recognized her from a wanted poster. The book details the events leading up to Mary's exposure and subsequent trial, as well as the reactions of the people involved.""Caraboo"" is a fascinating account of a real-life deception that captivated the public imagination in the early 19th century. It provides insight into the social and cultural context of the time, as well as the psychology of deception and the power of storytelling. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
