A House Boat On The Styx is a satirical fantasy novel written by American author John Kendrick Bangs in 1895. The story follows the adventures of Charon, the ferryman of Hades, who has been given a houseboat by the gods to serve as a meeting place for famous deceased individuals. The boat is anchored on the river Styx, which separates the world of the living from the world of the dead.Throughout the book, Charon hosts a series of meetings with famous historical figures, including Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare, and Napoleon Bonaparte. The characters engage in humorous conversations and debates about their accomplishments and legacies, while also reflecting on their lives and deaths. As the story progresses, the houseboat becomes a hub of political intrigue and power struggles, with different factions vying for control over the afterlife. The novel ultimately serves as a commentary on the nature of fame, power, and the afterlife, while also providing a humorous and entertaining read.Overall, A House Boat On The Styx is a witty and imaginative work of fiction that continues to be celebrated for its unique blend of humor and satire. What do you suppose would happen if Charon the Boatman got promoted... to Janitor. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
