Vaila is a novel written by M. P. Shiel. The story follows the life of a young woman named Vaila, who lives on a remote island in Scotland. Vaila is an orphan and has been raised by her grandmother, who is a strong and independent woman. Vaila's life is turned upside down when her grandmother dies and she is left alone on the island. She decides to leave the island and travel to London to find her father, who she has never met. Along the way, Vaila meets a variety of characters, including a wealthy businessman, a journalist, and a group of artists. As she navigates the unfamiliar world of London, Vaila begins to uncover secrets about her family and her past. The novel explores themes of identity, family, and the search for belonging.I asked with what motives, and in what particulars, the malice of his mother and aunt manifested itself. He replied that there was, he believed, no specific motive, but only a determined malevolence, involuntary and fated; and that the respect in which it manifested itself was to be found in the multiplied prayers and commands with which, for years, they had importuned him to seek again the far hold of his ancestors. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
