Poor Dear Margaret Kirby is a novel by Kathleen Norris, first published in 1908. The story centers around Margaret Kirby, a young woman from a poor family who dreams of a better life. Margaret is a talented artist and hopes to make a living from her work, but struggles to find success in a world that values wealth and social status above all else.As Margaret navigates the challenges of life in early 20th century America, she encounters a cast of characters who both help and hinder her progress. These include her wealthy aunt, who offers Margaret a chance to escape poverty but also tries to control her life, and a group of bohemian artists who inspire Margaret but also expose her to danger and temptation.Throughout the novel, Norris explores themes of class, gender, and creativity, and offers a nuanced portrait of a young woman struggling to find her place in a rapidly changing world. With its vivid characters, richly detailed settings, and insightful commentary on the human condition, Poor Dear Margaret Kirby remains a compelling and thought-provoking read more than a century after its initial publication. But the hour was darker and colder for Alanna. She searched and she hoped and she prayed in vain. She stood up, after a long hands-and- knees expedition under the tables where she had been earlier, and pressed her right hand over her eyes, and said aloud in her misery, ""Oh, I CAN'T have lost it! I CAN'T have. Oh, don't let me have lost it!""This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
