Memoirs of My Life and Writings is an autobiography written by the renowned historian Edward Gibbon. The book was published in 1796 and covers Gibbon's life from his childhood to his career as a historian. Gibbon is best known for his work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, which he spent over 20 years writing. In Memoirs of My Life and Writings, Gibbon discusses his education, his travels throughout Europe, and his experiences as a member of Parliament. He also provides insight into his writing process and the challenges he faced while researching and writing his monumental work on the Roman Empire. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of the most important historians of the 18th century and is a must-read for anyone interested in history, literature, or the art of writing. My indiscriminate appetite subsided by degrees in the historic line: and since philosophy has exploded all innate ideas and natural propensities, I must ascribe this choice to the assiduous perusal of the Universal History, as the octavo volumes successively appeared. This unequal work, and a treatise of Hearne, the Ductor historicus, referred and introduced me to the Greek and Roman historians, to as many at least as were accessible to an English reader. All that I could find were greedily devoured, from Littlebury's lame Herodotus, and Spelman's valuable Xenophon, to the pompous folios of Gordon's Tacitus, and a ragged Procopius of the beginning of the last century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
