Gladstone the Man: A Non Political Biography is a book written by David Williamson that provides a comprehensive and insightful look into the life of William Ewart Gladstone, one of the most prominent political figures in Victorian England. Unlike most biographies of Gladstone, this book focuses on his personal life and character, rather than his political career. The book covers Gladstone's early life, education, and family background, as well as his religious beliefs and his relationships with his wife and children. It also delves into his interests and hobbies, such as his love of literature and his passion for tree-felling.Throughout the book, Williamson paints a vivid portrait of Gladstone as a complex and multifaceted individual, with strengths and weaknesses like any other person. He explores the contradictions in Gladstone's character, such as his deep religious faith and his support for the death penalty, and the impact of his personal life on his political career.Overall, Gladstone the Man is a fascinating and engaging biography that offers a fresh perspective on one of the most important figures in Victorian England. It is a must-read for anyone interested in history, politics, or the life of this remarkable man.1898. Illustrated. A study of the life of Gladstone, a British liberal politician and Prime Minister.
