Smoke is a novel written by the Russian author Ivan Turgenev, first published in 1867. It tells the story of a wealthy Russian aristocrat named Irina, who returns to her hometown after living abroad for many years. There, she becomes involved in a love triangle between two men: the idealistic and intellectual Lavretsky and the charming but shallow Potugin. The novel explores themes of love, class, and social change in 19th century Russia. It also provides a satirical commentary on the upper classes and their preoccupations, as well as a critique of the political and social system of the time. Smoke is considered one of Turgenev's major works, and is known for its vivid characterizations and lyrical prose. It has been translated into many languages and adapted for stage and screen.1919. Turgenieff (Turgenev), novelist, poet, and playwright, known for his detailed descriptions about everyday live in Russia in the 19th century, he portrayed realistically the peasantry and the rising intelligentsia in its attempt to move the country into a new age. Smoke is the story of European community roots and changes, reflected both in Russian politics and in the lives of two individuals who find philosophies diverging. An excellent story of change permeating into all levels of society.
