The Hoosier School Master is a novel written by Edward Eggleston. The story is set in rural Indiana during the mid-19th century and follows the experiences of a young schoolteacher named Ralph Hartsook. Ralph is a recent college graduate who is hired to teach in a one-room schoolhouse in a small town. He quickly discovers that the students are rowdy and undisciplined, and the parents are suspicious of outsiders.Despite these challenges, Ralph is determined to make a difference in the lives of his students. He introduces new teaching methods and tries to instill a sense of discipline and respect in his students. He also becomes involved in the community and falls in love with a local girl named Mary. However, Ralph's efforts are met with resistance from some of the parents, particularly a wealthy farmer named Bud Means. Bud sees Ralph as a threat to his authority and tries to undermine his efforts. The conflict between Ralph and Bud comes to a head when Bud's son, Jimmy, is accused of stealing from the school. The Hoosier School Master is a classic tale of a young teacher's struggle to overcome adversity and make a difference in the lives of his students. It is a story of love, friendship, and the power of education to transform lives.1903. With 29 illustrations. American novelist and historian, Eggleston's novels depicting early life in southern Indiana have been widely read. The Hoosier Schoolmaster was one of the first examples of American local realistic fiction. The novel begins: Want to be a schoolmaster, do you? You? Well, what would you do in Flat Crick deestrick, I'd like to know? Why, the boys have driv off the last two, and licked the one afore them like blazes. You might teach a summer school, when nothin' but children come. But I ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿low it takes a right smart man to be schoolmaster in Flat Crick in the winter. They'd pitch you out of doors, sonny, neck and heels, afore Christmas. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
