Beautiful Joe is an autobiographical novel written by Marshall Saunders. The book tells the story of a dog named Joe who is rescued from a cruel owner and taken in by a loving family. Joe is a beautiful dog, but his beauty is marred by the fact that his ears and tail have been cruelly cut off by his previous owner. Despite his physical scars, Joe is a happy and loving dog who quickly becomes a beloved member of his new family. The book is written from Joe's perspective and is filled with his thoughts and observations about the world around him. Through Joe's eyes, readers are able to see the cruelty and kindness of humans, as well as the beauty and wonder of nature. The book is a powerful commentary on animal cruelty and the importance of treating animals with kindness and respect. Beautiful Joe is a heartwarming and inspiring story that has touched the hearts of readers for more than a century. The book has been translated into many languages and has been adapted into several movies and plays. It is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers of all ages.1893. Marshall Saunders is the pseudonym for Margaret Marshall Saunders. Beautiful Joe is the real name of a real dog, whose story she became familiar with while visiting her brother and his fiance Louise Moore. The Moores had some years earlier rescued Beautiful Joe from a vicious master who had cruelly beaten him and cut off his ears and tail. So moved was she in the presence of this abused animal, that she wrote a manuscript about his life, from an autobiographical perspective of the dog. It was the first Canadian book to sell more than one million copies. Throughout the rest of her life Saunders championed women's and animal rights, spoke out on social problems and was a passionate advocate of kindness to animals. For many decades Margaret Marshall Saunders was Canada's best known and best loved writer of children's stories. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
