    eBook (ePUB)

DYOR (Do Your Own Research..., as a patient)

As a physician I found it an interesting read, but I wonder if a layman would find that too. The first half of the book is casuistic. I could not really find a ‘how doctors think’ there. The way it is with casuistic: afterwards everybody is a smart ass. For me the book became interesting the moment Groopman started talking about the uncertainty of the expert. Maybe because of my personal bias for playing the detective as a physician, but also because of the author’s own path through the medical world as a patient. An almost incredible story of medical ‘faux pas’ with a - for crying out loud - ‘well known’ colleague. The best part of the book I found is the last part, where the brains of doctors really become the subject of the book, with al its qualities and limitations, including incongruities, inconsistencies and ambiguities.
