In Caligula begleitet der Leser die beiden Hauptcharaktere Rufus, einen Sklaven und Tierbändiger, und Cupido, einen erfolgreichen, germanischen Gladiator bei ihren Erlebnissen in Rom zu Lebzeiten Caligulas.
Der Autor bindet die beiden Charaktere geschickt in die Herrschaftszeit des Caligula ein.
Sehr lebhaft und farbig stellt Douglas das Leben auf dem Palatin dar. Intrigen, Pomp und Protz, sowie die Gräueltaten des Caligula zeichnet er bildhaft ab.
Für Liebhaber von Romanen über Roms Herrschaftszeit ist "Caligula" sehr zu empfehlen.
