Meine letzte Rezension Eine Seite noch von Meike Winnemuth
Wunderschön verfasste und flüssig zu lesende Liebeserklärung an Bücher. Nicht nur erhält man als Leser*in sachliche Informationen rund ums Lesen als Kulturpraxis und als das wohl schönste Hobby überhaupt, sondern auch ganz persönliche Einblicke in das Leben (und die Bücherregale) der Autorin. Leseratten werden sich selbst an vielen Stellen in Winnemuths Buch wiedererkennen. Der Blick auf Literatur erscheint mir in manchen Textpassagen allerdings zu privilegiert, zu elitär, zu engstirnig. Nichtsdestotrotz das perfekte Geschenk für alle, die nicht ohne Bücher können. (4/5)

Wunderschön verfasste und flüssig zu lesende Liebeserklärung an Bücher. Nicht nur erhält man als Leser*in sachliche Informationen rund ums Lesen als Kulturpraxis und als das wohl schönste Hobby überhaupt, sondern auch ganz persönliche Einblicke in das Leben (und die Bücherregale) der Autorin. Leseratten werden sich selbst an vielen Stellen in Winnemuths Buch wiedererkennen. Der Blick auf Literatur erscheint mir in manchen Textpassagen allerdings zu privilegiert, zu elitär, zu engstirnig.     George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones 5-Book Boxed Set (Song of Ice and Fire Series)

    A GAME OF THRONES: Immersive, gripping, and unique: The first book of the „A Song of Ice and Fire“ series defines the style and tone for the rest of the series. With „A Game of Thrones“ Martin set a new standard for the fantasy genre, which not many authors can possibly achieve. The main characters (there are many) are loveable, yet not without their faults which only makes them more realistic and relateable. The Starks, a noble Northern family, are in the focus of this first book, where they slowly drift apart from one another (geographically as well as emotionally), until there is no point of return. Meanwhile, a war between the Great Houses of Westeros is looming, a threat from the far North is growing and the last survivors of the Targaryen Dynasty, which conquered the continent on dragonback 300 years ago, are trying to raise an army. In my opinion „A Game of Thrones“ is the perfect beginning of an epic journey, though nostalgia may play a part in my rating. Plus the prologue may be the best start of any book (at least in the genre of fantasy and horror) ever. A CLASH OF KINGS: More characters, more kings, and more conflicts! The epic story continues and the readers get to travel to yet unseen places in Westeros and Essos, meet new people and get to know the magical elements of the world a little bit better. War is on and with it come intrigues, huge battles, and great tragedy. A STORM OF SWORDS: Cruel, devastating, heartbreaking. So much happens in this book and most of it ain’t good for our beloved POV-characters (Well, there are a few wins atleast...). Martin is a master of foreshadowing and creating tiny, little hints, which float right over one’s head on a first read. I love this book, it might even be my favourite of all time. A FEAST FOR CROWS: „A Feast for Crows“ is – in my opinion – the weakest book in the series, yet a masterpiece in itself. It’s more character than plot driven, which stings a little, when one remembers that there most certainly won’t be a sixth and seventh book. Nevertheless, it’s a great fantasy novel and character study which expands the world of „A Song of Ice and Fire“ and its people. Cersei’s incompetence is insanely (pun intended) funny, Brienne’ s determination inspiring and frustrating at the same time and Sansa slowly but surely learns to play the game. Known and new POV-characters must face the harsh realities of war and its consequences. A DANCE WITH DRAGONS: No one writes fantasy characters as well as GRRM does! *mild SPOILERS* I hated him. He was an arrogant prick, there’s no denying that, and also a traitor. And a child murderer. And even a sexual abuser. Yet in this book, he becomes one of my favourite characters. How does George do that?! Apart from that, this book has its ups and downs. The readers meet new characters as well as beloved ones – like Dany and Jon – once again. A few of the chapters are too long or little of significance happens in them (plotwise), while others are mindblowingly good. The biggest letdown however are the multiple cliffhangers on which this (most likely – I haven’t given up on it just yet. I’m delusional...) last book ends. Despite this, I can’t give it any less than five stars. I might be biased. (5/5)

    A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

    Ser Duncan and his newfound squire Egg both have something to hide as they travel around Westeros in search for adventure. In three short novellas the readers get to know and love the two main characters, whose names will be known by everyone in the main series of „A Song Of Ice And Fire“ set a few decades later. Funny and more lighthearted than ASOIAF, but still with its own tragedies, mysteries and darkness. (5/5)

    Attack on Titan 1

    „Attack on Titan“ war einer der ersten Mangas, die ich gelesen habe und was soll ich sagen? Die Latte wurde extrem hoch gelegt. Ich bin immer noch auf der Suche nach einer Reihe, die mich dermaßen packt. Hier gibt es wirklich alles: Mystery, Action, Horror, Humor, Emotionen. Geniales Worldbuilding und tolle Charaktere mit fantastischer Entwicklung. Eine originelle Story, die einen mit den Protagonist*innen mitfiebern und miträtseln und einem einfach keine Ruhe lässt. Kurzum: „Attack on Titan“ ist in meinen Augen der perfekte Manga. Noch besser ist nur der Anime, der durch atemberaubende Musik untermalt ist, durch qualitative Synchronisation die Figuren zum Leben erweckt und einige anfängliche Schwächen von Isayamas Zeichenstil ausgleichen kann.     The Secret History

    A murder mystery of a different kind. The question in this novel isn’t who murdered the victim, but why. And: Can they get away with it? Its characters are pretentious and unlikeable, yet intriguing. The dark academia setting is phenomenal as well as Tartts writing style. Is it bloated? For sure, but I loved every second reading this book (except for most of the epilogue...). Perfect for the cold season! (5/5)

    I don’t even know how to describe this book. It’s a beautiful, tragic, and heartbreaking dystopia. In spite of its length, it definitely leaves a long lasting impression. Just don’t expect any answers going into it. (5/5)

    Blood over bright haven

    Schon lange habe ich mich nicht mehr derart in einer Fantasy-Welt verloren… Sciona wird die erste Hochmagierin der aufgrund von Magie florierenden Stadt Tiran und damit geht ihr Lebenstraum in Erfüllung – scheinbar. Denn ihre männlichen Kollegen erkennen sie und ihre Fähigkeiten aufgrund ihres Geschlechts nicht an, schikanieren sie und stellen ihr einen vermeintlich nutzlosen Kwen-Hausmeister als Assistenten an die Seite. Dass sie damit einen fatalen Fehler begangen haben, bemerken sie zu spät. Gemeinsam mit Thomil, der als Kwen außerhalb des Schutzschildes der Stadt geboren wurde und beinahe alles im Leben verloren hat, kommt Sciona der dunklen Vergangenheit Tirans auf die Spur und steht schon bald vor einer unmöglichen Entscheidung, die nicht nur ihr eigenes Leben in Gefahr bringt... Sozialkritisch, emotional und ein Mittelfinger an den Kolonialismus – „Blood Over Bright Haven“ überzeugt mit moralisch grauen Figuren, tollem Worldbuilding mit Steampunk-Charakter und einem sehr wissenschaftlich angehauchten Magiesystem. (5/5)

    Tender is the Flesh

    Probably not the most realistic (in fact, highly unlikely) vision of the future, but nontheless a gripping, gruesome, and disturbing dystopia, which will haunt the reader for days and weeks after finishing the book. Where does humanity begin? Where does it end? (4,5/5)

    In my opinion „Circe“ is an almost perfect modern retelling of the myth around the Ancient Greek enchantress of the same name. Though the ending was a little bit of a letdown, it couldn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of this book and its main character. (4,5/5)

    Cry Baby - Scharfe Schnitte

    Hier sind Thriller und Familiendrama in einem Buch vereint. Flynns rasanter und direkter Schreibstil sowie der spannende Plot machen selbst die kürzeste Lesepause zur Qual. In der Darstellung der (problematischen) Figuren und der absolut kaputten Familiendynamik brilliert die Autorin. Sensible Themen werden mit grausigen Details und teils auch mit Humor gepaart. Absolut lesenswert, aber nichts für schwache Nerven! (5/5)

    Von Spinnen und Menschen

    „Von Spinnen und Menschen“ ist ein wundervolles Sachbuch, das mich (Arachnophobikerin seit ich denken kann) dazu gebracht hat, die Tierchen mit anderen Augen zu sehen. Angst und Ekel sind zwar immer noch vorhanden, jedoch animierte mich dieses Buch dazu, mich aktiv mit meiner Phobie und möglichen Hintergründen auseinanderzusetzen und in Folge konnte auch schon die ein oder andere Spinne vor dem Tod mittels Staubsauger bewahrt werden. Sprachlich ist das Buch sehr flüssig zu lesen und Mohnhaupt liefert spannende Einblicke in die Welt der Achtbeiner – sei es aus biologischer, kulturgeschichtlicher oder sozialer Sicht. Wirklich, wirklich empfehlenswert! (5/5)
