The Boy from the Underworld is a fantasy novel by the Strugatsky brothers, originally conceived as a screenplay.
The protagonist of the book is cadet Gag from the planet Giganda, where a bloody war between the Empire and the Duchy of Alai has been going on for a long time. During a desperate offensive, the cadets are thrown into battle and Gaga is mortally wounded. But he is saved from inevitable death by the progressor Roots Yashmaa, who literally pulled the cadet from the battlefield and sent him to Earth.
On Earth, Gag takes the local prosperity and peace for some sophisticated psychological test of the military intelligence of his native Duchy. Everywhere he sees a hidden threat and inhuman cunning. Will the hero, thoroughly poisoned by propaganda, be able to at least try to look at some completely obvious things with different eyes?
