Vicious

(5)
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same ambition in each other. A shared interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl with a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the arch-nemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end? “Supremely plotted and incredibly well-written.” The Independent on Sunday “Vicious is the superhero novel I've been waiting for: fresh, merciless, and yes, vicious.” Mira Grant, New York Times bestselling author “Schwab writes with the fiendish ingenuity, sardonic wit, and twisted imagination of a true supervillian.” Greg Cox, New York Times “A dynamic and original twist on what it means to be a hero and a villain. A killer from page one... Highly recommended!” Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author “Schwab gathers all the superhero/supervillain tropes and turns them on their sundry heads... I could not put it down.” F. Paul Wilson, New York Times bestselling author

„Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.“

Lena B., Thalia-Buchhandlung Linz Lentia

This book caught me in a tight grip and didn’t let go from the first moment I started reading.

To be honest, this book was phenomenal. I liked that it didn't have this typical hero vs. villain topic that is present in so many other books.

I really enjoyed reading about the complexity of some characters, especially the one of Eli Ever’s character. In fact Victoria Schwab manages to give all of her characters so much life that, when reading her books, I always can imagine them as real people. And this ability of hers surprised me in this book once again.

I liked the concept of superpowers mixed with the scientific aspect from the very beginning. It was amazing to read about how this theoretical approach to extraordinary abilities became reality.

This book very much reminded me of the movie Chronicle, starring Dane DeHaan as the main character. The best-friend-to-enemy relationship that Eli and Victor shared in this book is very similar to the one in this movie.

I can definitely recommend this book to anyone how enjoys reading about extraordinary powers and the blurring line between being a hero and becoming a villain.

V.E. Schwab has an amazing writing style - it's modern and fresh. The story is original, twisted, morbid and written in an unusual way. It wasn't the best book I've ever read but I don't regret that I spent my money on this. I sure will reread this book... V.E. Schwab has an amazing writing style - it's modern and fresh. Nice to read. I like how the characters are depicted. Though I think it gets predictable towards the end..
