Portrait
THE ONE MEMORY OF FLORA BANKS published in 2017 was Emily Barr's first novel for young adults and was a global hit. Before that, she worked as a journalist in London but always hankered after a quiet room and a book to write. She went travelling for a year, which gave her an idea for a novel set in the world of backpackers in Asia. This became BACKPACK, an adult thriller which won the WH Smith New Talent Award, and she has since written eleven more adult novels published in the UK and around the world. She lives in Cornwall with her partner and their children.

„Außergewöhnliche Geschichte, unbedingt lesen!“

Ursula Kutzer, Thalia-Buchhandlung Wien

Sehr, sehr lesenswert.

„Flora, be Brave!“

Sabrina Reiter, Thalia-Buchhandlung Wien, Donauzentrum

Emily Barr's "The One Memory of Flora Banks" is a great YA novel about an impaired girl who doesn't let her sickness hold her back.

Ever since she was ten years old, Flora hasn't been able to make new memories. That's because she suffers from something called anterograde amnesia. But at age 17 something unelievable happens: Flora kisses a boy and doesn't forget about it. Naturally, this means that he is her true love and able to cure her. So Flora sets out to find him and doesn't let the fact that he's moved to the other end of the world hold her back.

I absolutely loved reading this book. Flora is unlike any character I've ever read about before. Despite her limitations she's strong and determined, which I admire greatly.
The writing style reflects Flora's character and her sickness in a very authentic way. Sometimes it makes the book hard and frustrating to read, because of its many repetitions, but it's also necessary for the story.

Overall, "The One Memory of Flora Banks" is a great contemporary novel for young adults. Highly recommended!
