Norse Mythology

(4)
Introducing an instant classic master storyteller Neil Gaiman presents a dazzling version of the great Norse myths. Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people. Gaiman stays true to the myths while vividly reincarnating Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring and cunning; Thor, Odins son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki, the son of giants, a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator. From Gaimans deft and witty prose emerges the gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to dupe others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these ancient myths breathe pungent life again
Rezension
It's virtually impossible to read more than ten words by Neil Gaiman and not wish he would tell you the rest of the story . The halls of Valhalla have been crying out for Gaiman to tell their stories to a new audience. Hopefully this collection will be just the beginning Natalie Haynes, Observer

Mythology, an interesting subject. Norse mythology, also very interesting. My interest in the subject commenced about 8 years ago, with works like The Prose Edda (by Snorri Sturluson) and Gods and Myths of Northern Europe (by Hilda Ellis Davidson). My interest in the subject commenced about 8 years ago, with works like The Prose Edda (by Snorri Sturluson) and Gods and Myths of Northern Europe (by Hilda Ellis Davidson). Both very much recommended! A few years ago, I read The Norse Myths by Kevin Crossley-Holland; a worthy retelling of some of the myths, spiced up with information on said myths. Neil Gaiman referred in his foreword/introduction to Kevin-Crossley Holland and other authors, holding them in high esteem. For his take on some of the well-known myths, he combined the content of The Poetic Edda and 'The Prose Edda', which I mentioned above, to write his version of the creation of the world, its evolution, and its demise (Ragnarok). Gaiman's writing skills are beyond questioning. His latest output is pure entertainment and a very accessible work into Norse mythology in general. It was nice to re-read some of the myths found in 'The Prose Edda', as a sort of refreshing of my memory. Of course, not all tales were equally good, but that also counts for the original versions. And of course, which is typical for tales, there's some information missing. But tales were never meant to be entire novels. Loki - as everyone knows - is a crook, a villain, a pain in the ass, but at the same time, the other gods couldn't live without him, for the very reason that he many times also helped said gods by setting aright what he did wrong or by helping them out of trouble. Nevertheless, Thor should have finished him off much sooner, and the gods should have been stricter in their decisions and dealings whenever Loki was involved. Sometimes, they came across as crybabies, I find. "Oh, we're in trouble now. Loki, please help us, or we will lose (this or that) / have to pay (whatever large amount) / ...". Mighty gods, until Loki, the trickster, had to come to save the day (Mighty Mouse, anyone?). *sigh* Anyway, if you're into (Norse) mythology, then you'll like Gaiman's lighter take on the myths. Even if you're a Gaiman fan, I don't see why you would not love this book.
