Mere Christianity

(1)
Mere Christianity is the most popular of C. S. Lewis's works of nonfiction, with several million copies sold worldwide. Heard first as radio addresses and then published as three separate books--The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality this book brings together Lewis's legendary broadcast talks of the war years, talks in which he set out simply to "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times." It is a collection of scintillating brilliance which remains strikingly fresh for the modern reader, and which confirms C. S. Lewis's reputation as one of the leading Christian writers and thinkers of our age.

What is Christianity really about?

Lewis, a former atheist, talks about Christianity by means of logical and reasonable arguments in four different books. Book one is about the law of the human nature. Lewis states that behind the objective moral law that is inside all humans and which we are all not completely following there is a greater Something or Someone for it has to be declared by something or someone outside the law. He continues in book two with explaining who Christians say this Something or Someone is – the God of Christianity who alone gives meaning and who alone is good; and this goodness leads us to repentance. The practical application is the main theme of book three; Lewis writes about morality in different aspects, the seven virtues and some other topics like Christian marriage. He concludes with the more theoretical, based on theology, book four, which is about the Trinity, what the roles of God the Father, the Son and the Spirit are, finishing up with what it means that God lives in me and through me, that I live with Him and that He is transforming me in order to make me perfect. I enjoyed reading this book. While it’s not that easy to read and understand, it’s definitely worth it. Lewis writes in a very logical way – he gives arguments and reasons for what he states, giving examples and sharing little stories. He challenged me a lot through his writings, to think about what I believe and really deal with it. “Mere Christianity” is a book for people who want to deal honestly with questions of life and faith.
