Mere Christianity

With a New Introd. of the three Books "Broadcast Talks", "Christian Behaviour" and "Beyond Personality"

(1)

2012 marks the 60th Anniversary of the publication of C.S.Lewis's classic, Mere Christianity. Having sold over half a million copies in the UK alone, his overview of Christianity has been imitated many time, but never bettered. The book is compiled of the legendary radio talks which he gave during the war years.

Portrait
Born in Ireland in 1898, Clive Staples Lewis gained a triple First at Oxford and was Fellow and Tutor at Magdalen College from 1925-54, where he was a contemporary of Tolkien. In 1954 he became Professor of Mediaeval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge. C. S. Lewis was for many years an atheist, until his conversion, memorably described in his autobiography 'Surprised by Joy': "I gave in, and admitted that God was God ... perhaps the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England." He is celebrated for his famous series of children's books, the Narnia Chronicles (which have been filmed and broadcast many times), as well as his literary criticism and science fiction. C. S. Lewis died on 22nd November 1963.
Zitat
'He has quite a unique power for making theology an attractive, exciting and fascinating quest.' Times Literary Supplement 'Lewis seeks in Mere Christianity to help us see religion with fresh eyes, as a radical faith whose adherents might be likened to an underground group gathering in a war zone, a place where evil seems to have the upper hand, to hear messages of hope from the other side.' What is Christianity really about?

Lewis, a former atheist, talks about Christianity by means of logical and reasonable arguments in four different books. Book one is about the law of the human nature. Lewis states that behind the objective moral law that is inside all humans and which we are all not completely following there is a greater Something or Someone for it has to be declared by something or someone outside the law. He continues in book two with explaining who Christians say this Something or Someone is – the God of Christianity who alone gives meaning and who alone is good; and this goodness leads us to repentance. The practical application is the main theme of book three; Lewis writes about morality in different aspects, the seven virtues and some other topics like Christian marriage. He concludes with the more theoretical, based on theology, book four, which is about the Trinity, what the roles of God the Father, the Son and the Spirit are, finishing up with what it means that God lives in me and through me, that I live with Him and that He is transforming me in order to make me perfect. I enjoyed reading this book. While it’s not that easy to read and understand, it’s definitely worth it. Lewis writes in a very logical way – he gives arguments and reasons for what he states, giving examples and sharing little stories. He challenged me a lot through his writings, to think about what I believe and really deal with it. “Mere Christianity” is a book for people who want to deal honestly with questions of life and faith.
