Axel was born in Hamburg, Germany and he moved to England in 1982 to learn English and study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art. Axel has illustrated a number of books for various publishers, most famously, The Gruffalo, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and turned into a TV animation. He has written and illustrated several books since The Gruffalo has been published including the Pip and Posy series and Flip-Flap Farm, and his work has been translated into 42 languages. Axel lives in London with his partner and young daughter.
