Caro and Markos have settled into a routine: Wake up, eat breakfast, try to figure out who's going to try to assassinate Markos today . . . so things aren't exactly calm. Not only is Markos in constant danger, his claim to the Akhaian throne is largely unsupported by military strength, without which he doesn't have a chance.
Relief appears on the horizon in an unexpected form when a powerful Archon wants to side with Markos in his fight for the throne. But in exchange for an army, Markos must marry the Archon's daughter. Of course, this cuts Caro out of the equation. Now they must decide which is more important: their love for each other or the fate of Akhaia.
