"I was sitting on my bed, my eyes squeezed shut, conjugating German words. Ich habe Angst. Du hast Angst. Er hat Angst. Wir haben Angst. We are afraid. Wir haben Angst" Once again Jodi Picoult tackles a very delicate topic and excels at processing it. Sage Singer, a women in her mid-twenties, befriends nonagenarian Josef Weber. At first this odd friendship seems just fine, but what is Sage supposed to do when Josef asks her to help him die - especially since she's the descendant of a Holocaust survivor and he confesses to having been a Nazi? Although the story is a figment of Picoult's imagination rather than based on a real life occurrence it reads as such. Especially Minka's narration of her past is disturbingly realistic. Once again the author has outdone herself. This book had me weeping numerous times and reminded me of just how important it is to never forget this terrible part of our history.
