„Tell Me Something Good“

Sabrina Reiter, Thalia-Buchhandlung Wien, Donauzentrum

"Me Before You" is the first book in a heartbreaking duology by British author Jojo Moyes.

This is the story of Lou and Will, two people who couldn't be more different, yet seem to just be perfect for each other.
Lou is a bubbly, colorful young woman who ends up as a carer for quadriplegic Will after losing her previous job. Due to a road accident and its consequences Will isn't quite as cheerful as Lou, on the contrary: He wants to terminate his life. At first, Lou is shocked to find out that she was essentially hired to be on suicide watch, but soon she decides to help Will find something that's worth living for. In the following months both their lives change drastically, but will those changes be enough to make Will rethink his decision?

Going into this novel I expected it to be a dramatic love story, because that's the impression I got when I heard about "Me Before You" from other people. Of course, that is a big part of the story, but it is so much more! It deals with the daily struggles that disabled people have to cope with, ranging from impolite stares to the inability to access public transportation without help and constant paternalism. Furthermore, the author tackles the rather complicated issue that is assisted suicide. If this book won't keep you thoughtful for a while, I don't know which one will.
The characters, primarily Lou and Will, of course, I absolutely loved. The only one I stongly disliked was Lou's sister. She was just a little bit too self-centered for my taste and thus got on my nerves a lot.
Due to a couple of lenghty scenes it is "just" a four-star-book for me, although I am not quite sure if it seemed lengthy to me due to the writing style or the way the audiobook was read.

I am looking forward to reading "After You" and also can't wait to see how this book comes to life on the big screen.

I recommend this audiobook (as well as every other edition, of course) to readers who enjoy grand love stories as well as controversial topics that stay with you long after you've finished the story.

ergreifend
