Carpathians 12 - One of the series' best
von S. Fischer am 15.10.2008
Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This is the twelfth book in Christine Feehan's successful vampire romance-series about the 'Carpathians'. The Carpathians are a species of people who live on blood (usually without killing anyone), react badly to sunlight and have supernatural powers, like shapeshifting or speaking mind to mind. Their problem is that only few woman are left and the men get more and more aggresssive over time unless they find their lifemate. If they lose control and start killing people, they turn into ruthless and brutal vampires who are hunted down by their own people. 'Dark Melody' is the third and last part of the series' subsection about the 'Lost Ones', a group of Carpathian children who lost their families and lived on their own as a result, not knowing that others of their kind had survived, too. Nowadays, they are travelling around as musicians, but have lately become a target for human vampire hunters. In 'Dark Challenge' and 'Dark Fire', all but Dayan found their lifemates. They then split up to escape the vampire hunters and Dayan went with Cullen, a human who helped them and is now on the hunters' hitlist, so he could protect him. Alone and at risk of becoming a vampire himself, Dayan finally finds his lifemate when he's jamming with another band in a bar and his lifemate Corinne walks in with her best friend Lisa. Lisa and Cullen are attracted to each other from the start. The same is true for Dayan and Corinne, but their situation is quite difficult: Corinne was married to her childhood friend, Lisa's brother John. When he made the mistake to talk about his and Corinne's paranormal abilities he was murdered by the vampire hunters and they are now after her and Lisa. As if that weren't bad enough, she is 6 months pregnant and suffering from a severe heart condition. Dayan could save her by making her Carpathian through blood exchanges. But that would kill her unborn child, who is a psychic and therefore a potential lifemate herself. On the run from the vampire hunters, every day is a battle to keep Corinne alive and to give her child enough time so she can survive being born... This is a very unusual book in the series. It has its battles with vampires and vampire hunters, but concentrates more on the characters and Corinne's difficult situation - the choice between her life and that of her daughter. That gave the book a lot of depth and intensity. As a result I'd say it's one of the best of the series. It was also very enjoyable that some of the characters readers have come to know and like in former books, e. g. Gregori, Darius, Shea, Desari and others, play a role. 'Dark Melody' is a great book, which is enjoyed best when you already know the others in the series.
