„Liebe mit Handicap“

Christina Welser, Thalia-Buchhandlung Salzburg

"I'm not a shitty person, but I'm about to do a shitty thing. And you will hate me, and some other people will hate me, but I'm going to do it anyway to protect you and also myself."

After years away Libby, who is known as the girl who had to be rescued from her house by a crane, is finally back at school. As if she hadn't already dreaded her return enough, her first encounter with Jack, one of the most popular guys in school, starts off with him "borrowing" her for a game of "Fat Girl Rodeo" in the middle of the cafeteria. Of course, Libby is furious with him and fights back. But what she doesn't know yet is that Jack hasn't had the easiest life either. He is face-blind, which basically means, that he doesn't recognize people, not even his friends and family.

Jennifer Niven's "Holding Up the Universe" is a great book, that's not just a typical high school story about not really fitting in. It's about the scarring effects bullying has on people, about tolerance and being true to yourself.
The two narrators Libby and Jack are great protagonists who each haven't had the easiest of lives, but try to make the best of it. Especially Libby is one of the strongest characters I've ever read about. She is just so unapologetically herself it's nothing short of inspiring. She stands up to her bullies and has the biggest heart imaginable.

I recommend "Holding Up the Universe" to teenagers and adults alike. It really is a great book.

What a great book from Jennifer Niven, I've read it within one day! Libby's and Jack's story is one you won't forget so fast and gets you thinking about your own reactions to stuff like that.

Libby, a heavily overweight girl, who returns to highschool after 4 years of absent. Jack, popular enought to not get bullied and to fit in, but what no one knows about him: he is face blind. And those to meet and form a friendship that overcome any prejudices. A story about friendship and love so sweet the heart is almost not able to handle it. Almost. I learnt a lot reading this well researched and also beautiful written book.
